How an international move from Dubai works

International removals follow the same path whichever country you are moving to. The mover in Dubai handles the export side and works with a partner company at the destination.

  1. Survey and volume

The mover surveys your home, in person or by video, and estimates the volume in cubic metres. That decides whether you need a full container, a shared one or air freight.

  2. Export packing and inventory

Everything is packed for sea or air, and each box is numbered on a packing list. Customs at both ends work from that list.

  3. UAE export clearance

The mover or its freight agent files the export paperwork and books the shipment out of Jebel Ali or the airport.

  4. Transit

Sea freight takes weeks; air freight takes days. Shared containers can wait at the port until the container is full.

  5. Destination customs

You or the destination agent clear the goods using that country's form: ToR1 for the UK, Form 3299 for the USA, BSF186 for Canada, and so on.

  6. Delivery

On a door-to-door move, the destination agent delivers, unpacks and removes packing waste.

Door-to-door market ranges for the most-quoted routes, compiled from public price pages of Dubai international movers, freight forwarders and marketplaces. Sea freight rates change often, so movers confirm the price on the day they quote.

Full container, shared container or air freight?

The right choice depends mostly on volume and how soon you need your things. The sea vs air freight guide goes into more detail.

Full container, shared container or air freight?
OptionSuitsTrade-off
20 ft container (FCL)A 1 or 2-bedroom home, or more if you pack tightlyYour goods travel sealed and alone, but you pay for the whole container
Shared container (LCL)Smaller loads, roughly a studio or a few roomsCheaper for small volumes, but slower, because the container must fill first
Air freightSuitcases and boxes you need in the first weeksFast, but priced by weight and volume, so costly for furniture

Papers an international mover will ask for

Have these ready before the packing day. The international documents checklist has the full list.

  • Passport and visa copies, and the residence status you will hold at the destination
  • The destination address, or a temporary address if you do not have one yet
  • A signed packing list or inventory, with values for insurance
  • The destination customs form, or the details the agent needs to file it
  • A list of items that may need permits: alcohol, medicines, antiques, firearms, plants and food

What door to door usually means, and what it leaves out

Usually included

  • Export packing, inventory and loading in Dubai
  • UAE export paperwork
  • Sea or air freight to the destination port or airport
  • Destination customs clearance by the partner agent
  • Delivery, unpacking and debris removal

Usually extra or paid at the destination

  • Import duty and taxes if you do not qualify for relief
  • Customs inspections, scans and the storage while they happen
  • Port storage if you are not ready to receive the goods
  • Access problems at the new home, such as a long carry or no parking
  • Marine insurance, unless it is listed in the quote

What drives an international moving quote

Volume
Cubic metres decide the container size or shared-container charge.
Route and port
Inland destinations need a rail or road leg after the port.
Freight rates on the day
Container rates move with fuel and demand, so quotes expire.
Packing
Export packing uses more material than a local move.
Destination charges
Terminal handling, customs and delivery at the far end vary by country and city.

Getting international moving quotes

  1. Know your volume

Ask for a survey, or list your furniture room by room, before comparing prices.

  2. Read your destination's customs rules

Check the country guide above, so you can tell the mover which relief you will claim.

  3. Compare door-to-door quotes

Make sure each quote covers the same things at the destination, how long the price is valid, and when each payment is due: before packing, before shipping or on delivery.

  4. Request a quote

Use the quote form; we pass the request to a moving company that handles international moves from Dubai.

International moving questions

Common questions about moving abroad from Dubai.

How much does it cost to move abroad from Dubai?

It depends on volume and route. Typical door-to-door market ranges for a 20 ft container, last checked October 2026, are AED 18,000–27,000 to the UK, AED 22,000–32,000 to the USA and AED 8,000–13,000 to India.

Is sea freight or air freight better?

Sea freight suits furniture and most household goods. Air freight suits a small number of boxes you need quickly. Many people send most of the home by sea and a few boxes by air.

What is a shared container?

A container shared with other people's shipments (LCL, less than container load). You pay for the space you use, but it can take longer, because it ships once it is full.

Do I pay customs duty on my household goods?

Often not, if you qualify for the destination's relief for people changing residence, such as the UK's transfer of residence relief. The rules and forms differ by country; see each country guide.

Which items cannot be shipped?

Rules differ by country, but alcohol, tobacco, food, plants, medicines, weapons and some antiques usually need permits or are excluded. Ask the mover for the destination's list before packing.
