Moving from Dubai to the UK: Removals, Costs and Customs
Removals from Dubai to the UK typically cost AED 18,000–27,000 door to door for a 20 ft container and AED 4,000–9,500 for a shared-container part load (market ranges last checked October 2026). Most people moving their home qualify for UK transfer of residence relief, which removes import duty and VAT when you apply on form ToR1 before the goods ship.

Dubai to UK removal costs
Typical market ranges for door-to-door moves from Dubai to the UK, compiled from public price pages of Dubai international movers and freight marketplaces.
| Job | Typical range |
|---|---|
| Dubai to the UK, 20 ft container | AED 18,000–27,000 per shipment |
| Dubai to the UK, shared container (part load) | AED 4,000–9,500 per shipment |
A 20 ft container usually holds a 1 or 2-bedroom home. A 3-bedroom home or a villa may need a 40 ft container, which is quoted from the survey because published prices vary too much.
UK customs: transfer of residence relief and ToR1
HMRC lets people who are moving their home to the UK bring their belongings in free of import duty and VAT under transfer of residence (ToR) relief. The full steps are in the UK ToR1 transfer of residence guide; the main conditions, from GOV.UK, are below.
Who qualifies
- You have lived outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months before the move
- You have owned and used the goods for at least 6 months before moving
- You bring the goods in within 12 months of moving to the UK, in one or more shipments
- You will use them for the same purpose in the UK, and not lend, hire out or sell them within 12 months
When to file ToR1
Apply for approval before the goods ship, using the ToR1 form. HMRC gives you a unique reference number, which your mover's UK agent quotes on the import declaration. Without a valid reference, you may be billed for import duty and charges.
What relief does not cover
Alcohol, tobacco and commercial vehicles are excluded, and the relief does not replace licences for restricted goods such as firearms. Leave duty-free alcohol out of the shipment unless you are ready to pay duty on it.
Timing a Dubai to UK move
Plan backwards from the day you need furniture in the UK. Sea freight takes several weeks door to door, and a shared container can wait at the port until it is full. Many people send a small air shipment with bedding, kitchen basics and work items so they can live in the new home while the container is at sea.
Your UK address matters for delivery: flats with no parking, narrow streets or no lift may need a smaller shuttle vehicle from the depot, which the UK agent charges for. Tell the mover about access at the UK end when you ask for the quote. The sea vs air freight guide helps you decide what to send by air.
Questions to ask a Dubai to UK remover
- Is the quote door to door, and which UK charges are not included?
- Is it a sole 20 ft container or a part load, and how long will the part load wait to ship?
- Who files the UK import declaration, and do you need my ToR1 reference before loading?
- What is the marine insurance cover and the excess, in writing?
- Will the UK agent unpack and take away the packing materials?
- What do I pay before the container sails, and what is the charge if I cancel after packing?
What changes the price of a UK move
- Volume
- The step from a part load to a full container, or from 20 ft to 40 ft, is the biggest price jump.
- UK delivery address
- Remote areas and difficult access add shuttle and labour costs.
- Freight rates
- Sea freight rates move often, so check how long a quote is valid.
- Storage
- If the UK home is not ready, storage at the destination depot is charged by the week or month.
