Indian customs: transfer of residence allowances

Duty-free allowance by time abroad
- Stay abroad of 3 to 12 months: up to Rs 1.5 lakh
- At least 1 year abroad in the preceding 2 years: up to Rs 3 lakh
- 2 years or more abroad: up to Rs 7.5 lakh
Conditions for the highest allowance
The 2-year tier applies only if your short visits to India in the preceding two years add up to no more than six months, and you have not used this concession in the preceding three years.
What to keep ready
Your passport with entry and exit stamps, proof of residence in the UAE, the packing list with values, and the bill of lading from the mover. The Indian agent uses these to claim the allowance at the port.
Port, inland delivery and timing
Most household shipments from Dubai go by sea to a major port such as Nhava Sheva (Mumbai), Chennai, Kochi or Mundra, and then by road to your city. A door-to-door quote should say which port it uses and whether delivery to your home, unloading and unpacking are included.
Customs clearance in India is linked to your own arrival, so plan your flight and the shipment together. Ask the mover how much time the Baggage Rules, 2026 allow between your arrival and the goods, and what happens if the container arrives before you.
