Side-by-side comparison

Side-by-side comparison
Sea freightAir freight
CostLower per cubic metre; the usual choice for a household.Much higher; priced on weight or volume, whichever is greater.
Door-to-door timeWeeks, depending on the route and connections.Much faster: transit is counted in days rather than weeks, plus clearance.
What fitsFurniture, appliances, a whole home.Suitcases and boxes; bulky furniture is rarely worth it.
PackingExport packing, crating for fragile pieces.Lighter packing to keep weight down.
CustomsSame rules as air; the arrival date matters for some allowances.Same rules as sea.

Exact transit times depend on the shipping line, the port and the connection, so ask each mover for its estimated sailing and delivery dates in writing rather than relying on a general figure.

Full container or shared container

  • A 20 ft full container is usually enough for a 1 or 2-bedroom home. It is loaded at your door in Dubai, sealed, and only opened at customs or at your new home.
  • A shared container (part load, LCL) is priced by volume. Published UK figures cover roughly 5 to 10 cubic metres; US and Canada figures about 5 cubic metres, roughly a 1-bedroom home.
  • Part loads cost less for small volumes but can take longer, because the container waits to be filled and is unpacked at a hub.
  • Ask whether the price is freight only or door to door with packing; the gap is large. Published UK part-load prices span both.

Customs timing rules to check

The speed of the shipment matters when the destination ties duty-free import to your arrival date:

Checked October 2026. Saudi Arabia ties its household goods exemption to a six-month window from arrival; see the Saudi guide.

Splitting between air and sea

A split shipment helps families and anyone starting work soon after arrival:

  • By air: clothes for the season, work equipment, children’s school things, a few kitchen basics and bedding.
  • By sea: furniture, appliances where the voltage and plugs suit the destination, books, decor and everything else.
  • Carry with you: passports, certificates, jewellery, medicines and laptops.

Ask the mover to put both shipments on the same inventory with clear labels, so each customs declaration lists the right items.

Sea and air freight questions

Is sea freight or air freight cheaper for moving from Dubai?

Sea freight, for anything more than a few boxes. Air freight is charged by weight or volume at a much higher rate, so it suits a small shipment you need quickly. Furniture and most of a household usually go by sea.

What is the difference between a full container and a shared container?

A full container (FCL), usually 20 ft for a 1 or 2-bedroom home, is yours alone and sealed in Dubai. A shared container or part load (LCL) carries several households’ goods and costs less for small volumes, but can take longer because the container is filled and unpacked at hubs.

How much does it cost to ship a container from Dubai to the UK?

Published price pages put a 20 ft container from Dubai to the UK at AED 18,000–27,000 door to door, and a part load of roughly 5 to 10 cubic metres at AED 4,000–9,500 (typical ranges, last checked October 2026).

Can I send some things by air and the rest by sea?

Yes. A common approach is a small air shipment with what you need in the first weeks and the furniture by sea. Check the destination’s customs timing rules for both shipments.
