On moving day in Dubai the crew arrives, walks through the home with you, protects the lift and floors, loads the truck, drives to the new address, unloads, reassembles furniture and asks you to sign off. For anything bigger than a one-bedroom apartment, plan for most of the day. Your job is to have the permits and lift bookings confirmed, be there to answer questions, and check everything before you sign.
The day before
- Confirm with the mover: start time, crew size, truck size, and whether the crew will pack on the day or only load.
- Confirm both buildings: the move permit, the service lift slot and the loading bay at the old and the new address. Ask who keeps the permit, you or the mover, and send the mover a copy.
- Empty and defrost the fridge and freezer so they can drain overnight.
- Pack an essentials bag that stays with you: Emirates ID, passports, tenancy contract, keys and access cards, laptop, chargers, medicines, a change of clothes and bedding for the first night. Our guide on what movers won’t pack lists what else should travel with you.
- Clear a path from each room to the front door, and take down anything fixed to the walls that the mover is not taking down.
Moving day hour by hour
This is an example for a two-bedroom apartment where packing was done the day before and the drive is across Dubai. Your times will move with the lift slot your building gives you.
| Time | What happens | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 7:45 am | You meet building security and check the lift booking | Have the permit on your phone |
| 8:00 am | Crew arrives; team leader walks through the home | Point out fragile and valuable items and anything that stays behind |
| 8:30 am | Lift walls, floors and door frames are covered | Check the protection is in place before the first load |
| 9:00 am to 12:30 pm | Furniture is wrapped and taken apart; boxes and furniture are loaded | Stay reachable; check each room as it empties |
| 12:30 pm | Truck leaves | Do a last walk-through and go ahead to the new home with the keys and access cards |
| 1:30 to 4:30 pm | Unloading, placing furniture and reassembly | Tell the crew where large pieces go; check items as they come off |
| 5:00 pm | Final check and sign-off | Check the truck is empty and note any damage before signing |
Two things often stretch this timetable in Dubai. The first is the drive: since 1 October 2026 trucks are barred from Sheikh Zayed Road and Beirut Street from 6 am to 10 pm, and from some urban roads at peak hours, so the truck may take a longer route than your car. The second is the lift: if the new building’s slot starts later than the truck arrives, the crew waits. Ask the mover to plan the drive and both lift slots together.
What to do while the crew is working
- Stay in the home or close by. The team leader will have questions about what goes, what stays and how things come apart.
- Keep children and pets in one closed room or with someone else for the day.
- Keep documents, jewellery, cash and devices with you, not on the truck.
- Check each room, cupboard and balcony once it is empty, including the storage room and the parking space.
- Take meter photos and hand over or record anything your landlord needs, such as access cards and remote controls.
At the new home
- Arrive before the truck so you can let the crew in, show them the lift and check the corridor protection.
- Put a sign on each door that matches the room names on the boxes.
- Tell the crew where the bed, sofa and wardrobes go before they carry them in. Moving them twice wastes time.
- Check that electricity, water and cooling are on. If your DEWA account at the new address is not active yet, the crew may have to place furniture in a dark, hot home.
- Ask the crew to reassemble beds first so you can sleep there that night.
Common moving-day problems and how to handle them
The building has not approved the move
This is the most common reason a move is cancelled on the day. It usually happens because the permit was applied for late, a document was missing, or the mover’s trade licence or insurance certificate was not sent to the building. Confirm the approval in writing two days before, and keep a copy on your phone. Our guide to building management approval lists the usual documents.
The service lift is booked, broken or too small
Confirm the booking the day before and again in the morning. If the lift breaks down, ask building management how long the repair will take and whether a second lift can be used. If a sofa or wardrobe does not fit, the crew can usually take it apart; measure the largest pieces and the lift beforehand. See booking the service elevator for what to ask.
The crew is late
Ask for the team leader’s number the evening before. If the crew is running late, ask for a new arrival time and tell both buildings, because a late start can push the move past the end of your lift slot.
Furniture does not fit in the new home
Measure the doors, corridors and rooms in the new home before moving day. If something will not fit on the day, the options are to take it apart, leave it on the truck for storage, or sell or donate it later.
Something is damaged
Photograph the damage straight away, show it to the team leader and write it on the delivery or completion form before you sign. Then report it to the mover in writing as soon as you can and ask how its claims process works. Our guide to moving insurance and damage claims explains what movers usually cover.
Rain, dust or heat
Rain is rare in Dubai but heavy when it comes, and dust storms happen in spring and summer. Loading should pause in a storm. In summer, outdoor work stops between 12:30 and 3:00 pm from 15 June to 15 September, so make sure most of the outdoor loading is done in the morning.
Before the crew leaves
- Walk through the old home one last time, including storage rooms and the parking space.
- Look inside the truck to make sure it is empty.
- Check boxes and furniture against the inventory, if the mover gave you one.
- Write any damage or missing items on the paperwork before you sign it.
- Ask building management at both addresses to inspect the common areas and confirm in writing that the move deposit will be returned.
Whether to tip the crew is up to you; our page on tipping movers in Dubai covers the usual practice.
How long does a move take?
A studio or small one-bedroom apartment is often done in half a day. A two- or three-bedroom apartment usually takes most of a day, and longer on a high floor or with packing on the same day. A large villa can take a full day or be split over two. The main things that add time are the number of floors, how long each lift trip takes, the distance from the loading bay to the lift, and whether the crew is also packing.
After moving day
In the days after the move, close your DEWA account at the old address if you have not already done so (DEWA emails the final bill within 24 working hours of the move-out date you choose), update your address with your bank, employer and delivery apps, and arrange the final inspection of your old home. Our Dubai moving checklist and change of address checklist cover the rest.
If you are still choosing a mover, our page on movers and packers in Dubai explains what they do and how to compare quotes. When you are ready, request a free quote and ask the mover that contacts you for a timetable that fits both buildings’ move hours.
Questions people ask
What time do movers usually arrive in Dubai?
Most crews start between 7 and 9 am, so that loading fits inside the building’s permitted move hours. In summer an early start matters more, because outdoor work stops between 12:30 and 3:00 pm from mid-June to mid-September. Confirm the arrival time the evening before.
Do I need to be there for the whole move?
You or someone you trust should be at the old home during loading and at the new home during unloading. Buildings often want the resident present, the crew will have questions about what goes where, and someone has to check and sign the paperwork at the end.
Can I finish packing on the morning of the move?
Only the last few items, such as bedding and toiletries, which can go into your essentials bag. Anything else left unpacked slows the crew down and can push the move past your lift slot. If you need packing on the day, book it with the mover in advance.
What if the move takes longer than quoted?
Ask before moving day how the mover charges for extra hours or a second day, and get it in writing. If the move is running long, agree any extra charge with the team leader before the crew carries on.
