Man with a Van vs Full-Service Movers in Dubai

At a glance

Last checked

A man with a van is enough for a handful of items or a lightly furnished studio, as long as you pack, take apart and carry things yourself and your buildings do not ask for a licensed mover. For a furnished one-bedroom or anything bigger, a tower with a booked lift slot, or a move in summer, a full-service mover is usually the better choice, because the van’s low headline price grows once you count extra trips, helpers, materials and your own time.

What a full-service move typically costs

These are typical Dubai market ranges for a local full-service move (loading, transport and unloading), last checked October 2026. They are not prices offered by Movers Dubai.

What a full-service move typically costs
HomeMovePacking service, if added
StudioAED 800–1,200AED 300–500
1-bedroom apartmentAED 1,200–1,800AED 500–800
2-bedroom apartmentAED 1,800–3,000AED 800–1,200
3-bedroom villaAED 3,500–6,000Quoted separately

Man-with-a-van operators quote per trip or per hour, and their prices vary too much from one listing to the next for a reliable range. That is why it is better to work out the full cost of a van move yourself, as below. For more detail on full-service prices, see typical moving costs in Dubai.

How to compare the real cost

A van quote and a full-service quote only compare fairly once you add everything the van price leaves out:

  1. Trips: ask how many loads your furniture and boxes will take, and multiply the per-trip price by a realistic number, not the best case.
  2. Helpers: add the cost of any helpers, at both ends.
  3. Materials: add boxes, tape and wrap. A medium box alone typically costs AED 6–8 in Dubai, and a one-bedroom home can fill dozens.
  4. Taking apart and putting back: if you will pay a handyman to reassemble beds and wardrobes, add it. Typical market rates are AED 100–400 per item.
  5. Building time: each extra trip needs the service lift and the loading bay again. Check that all trips fit in your lift slot.
  6. Your time and risk: count the days you will spend packing and carrying, and what you would lose if a TV or glass table broke with no one to claim against.

For a single sofa or a few boxes, the van still wins easily. For a furnished home, the totals are often much closer than the headline prices suggest.

When a man with a van makes sense

  • You are moving one or two items, for example a sofa you sold online or a bed for a new flat.
  • You are moving between two furnished homes with a few suitcases and boxes.
  • You have a lightly furnished studio, nothing fragile, and friends to help carry.
  • You are taking a few things to a storage unit.
  • Neither building asks for a licensed mover or a long list of documents.

When full-service movers are the better choice

  • A furnished one-bedroom or larger: the volume needs several van trips and many hours of carrying.
  • A tower with a lift slot: a crew with a single truck can usually finish inside the slot; repeated van trips may not. See our high-rise moving tips.
  • Buildings that ask for the mover’s trade licence: many buildings want it with the permit application, and a freelance driver may not be able to provide it.
  • Fragile or valuable items: glass, art, antiques and large TVs need proper wrapping and a closed truck.
  • Summer moves: from 15 June to 15 September outdoor work is not allowed between 12:30 and 3:00 pm, so loading has to be fast and well organised in the morning.
  • Villas and offices: heavy items, garden furniture or IT equipment need more hands and tools. See commercial movers in Dubai for office moves.

Packing and protection

The biggest practical difference is how your things are wrapped and loaded. With a van, you pack every box, and furniture often travels with a blanket over it in an open or lightly secured load. A full-service crew wraps upholstery in stretch film, puts corner guards on wooden furniture, uses wardrobe boxes for hanging clothes and straps the load inside a closed truck. If you pack your own boxes, a mover can also argue later that damage inside them was caused by the packing, which makes claims harder.

Checking who you are hiring

Whoever you book, ask for the business name and trade licence number and check it on the Dubai licence search before you pay. Then ask, and get in writing:

  • What exactly the price includes: crew size, truck, materials, taking furniture apart and putting it back.
  • How many trips or hours the price covers, and the rate for extra ones.
  • What happens if something is damaged, and the limit of the mover’s liability.
  • Who arranges the building permit and lift slot.
  • The cancellation and rescheduling terms.
  • Any extra charges for stairs, long carries from the parking spot, or heavy items.

Three common situations

Two furnished flats, a few boxes: a van with one helper is the sensible choice. Book it for a quiet time of day and check that both buildings allow it.

A furnished two-bedroom in a tower: the van would need several trips, each with its own lift ride and loading bay wait, and you would do the packing. A full-service crew with one truck is usually quicker and close in total cost.

A small office: desks, screens and network kit need careful packing and a building that accepts the mover’s documents. Use a commercial mover.

If you are still unsure, our page on movers and packers in Dubai explains what a full-service move includes, and studio movers in Dubai covers small moves. You can also request a free quote with your inventory and both addresses; a mover that serves your area can tell you whether a small crew is enough, and you are not obliged to book.

Questions people ask

Can a man with a van move a whole apartment in Dubai?

It can, but for a furnished apartment it usually means several trips, each needing the service lift and loading bay again, and you doing the packing and much of the carrying. Check that both buildings accept the driver, and that all the trips fit in your lift slot.

Is a man with a van cheaper than movers in Dubai?

For one or two items, yes. For a furnished home, the gap shrinks once you add extra trips, helpers, boxes, reassembly and your own time, and you take on more risk if something breaks. Work out the full cost of the van move before comparing it with a full-service quote.

Do man-with-a-van services have insurance?

Many do not offer any cover for your goods, and some work without a registered business. Ask before you book, check the trade licence on the Dubai licence search, and keep valuables and fragile items with you if there is no cover.
