Upright and grand pianos are moved differently

Upright pianos

An upright piano stays upright. The crew wraps it in blankets, straps it to a dolly or skid and moves it with the keyboard lid locked or taped shut. The weak points are the legs and the castors, which are not designed to take the piano's weight over rough floors or door sills, so the piano should not be rolled on them.

Grand and baby grand pianos

A grand piano is turned on its straight side onto a padded piano board. The legs, pedal lyre and lid are taken off and wrapped separately. It needs more people, more space to turn in corridors and a lift or staircase that can take its length on the board.

Digital pianos

A digital piano is moved like other electronics: in its box if you kept it, or wrapped and kept upright. Remove the stand and pedals first.

Stairs, service lifts and building rules

The route out matters more than the distance. Measure the service lift door and depth at both buildings and compare them with the piano's width and depth; for a grand, compare with the length of the case. If it does not fit the lift, the piano goes by the stairs, which many towers only allow with building management's approval.

Protecting a piano from Dubai heat and humidity

Pianos are made of wood, felt and metal under high string tension, and sudden changes in heat and humidity are hard on them. In Dubai's summer, the truck and the loading bay are the risky parts. Ask the mover to load the piano last and unload it first, so it spends as little time as possible outside air-conditioned rooms.

At the new home, keep the piano away from AC vents, windows in direct sun and outside walls. Let it settle in the room for a few weeks before you have it tuned, because the tuning will drift while it adjusts.

• Which equipment will you bring: piano board, skid, straps, stair-climbing trolley?
• Will you take off and refit the legs, lyre and lid of a grand?
• Is the piano priced as a separate line, and what is your liability cover for it, in writing?
• Will the piano travel in an air-conditioned truck or spend time in a depot?
