The four parts of a warehouse move

Stock

Count and reconcile stock before the move, freeze movements for the move window, and decide what ships to customers from the old site, what moves and what is written off. Pallets keep their labels, and the new locations are mapped before the first truck leaves.

Racking and shelving

Pallet racking has to be emptied, taken down, moved and re-installed level and anchored. Ask whether the mover does this itself or uses a racking installer, and whether the racking will be inspected after it is re-erected. Damaged uprights and beams are usually replaced, not moved.

Equipment

Forklifts, pallet jacks, packing machines and workshop tools need their own plan. Heavy machinery may need a crane, rigging and an electrician to disconnect and reconnect it.

Office and IT

The warehouse office, scanners and the warehouse system move last and come back first. The IT relocation guide covers shutdown and testing.

Site access, free zones and truck timing

Industrial areas and free zones control who and what comes through the gate. If either site is in a free zone such as Jebel Ali Free Zone, ask the free zone and your landlord which entry passes the moving company's trucks and crew need, and how far ahead to apply.

Heavy trucks also follow RTA rules. From 1 October 2026, trucks are barred from some roads all day and from others at peak hours, and an RTA mobility permit is needed for essential trips in the banned hours. Ask the mover for its truck route and timing, especially if the move runs across the city.

What a warehouse mover will ask at the site visit

  • Number of pallet positions in use and the racking type and height
  • Forklift access at both sites and the dock or ramp arrangements
  • Any machinery that needs disconnecting, rigging or a crane
  • Whether stock is fragile, temperature-sensitive or hazardous
  • How long the business can stop shipping, and whether to move in phases
  • Free zone or gate requirements at both sites

Cover for stock in transit

A mover's standard liability is often limited per item or by weight, which may be far below the value of a pallet of stock. Ask what the mover's cover is, in writing, and check with your own insurer whether goods in transit are covered during the move. The insurance and claims guide explains the difference.

What a warehouse move quote depends on

Pallet and racking volume
The number of pallet positions and bays to take down sets the size of the job.
Equipment
Forklifts, cranes and rigging for heavy machinery are often hired in.
Downtime allowed
A short shutdown means bigger crews and longer shifts.
Distance and routes
Truck restrictions can limit when loaded trucks run between sites.
Stock type
Fragile, high-value or hazardous goods need extra packing and paperwork.

How to get warehouse moving quotes

  1. Map both sites

Prepare layouts of both warehouses with racking, docks and where stock will go.

  2. Book site visits

Ask each mover to visit both sites; warehouse quotes from a phone call are rarely reliable.

  3. Agree the move window

Fix the stock freeze, shipping cut-off and restart day with your team and customers.

  4. Request a quote

Send the basics through the quote form; we pass them to a moving company that does warehouse moves.

Warehouse relocation questions

What businesses ask before moving a warehouse in Dubai.

How much does it cost to move a warehouse in Dubai?

There is no fair standard range, because racking, pallet volume, machinery and access differ so much. Movers quote from a site visit to both warehouses.

Do warehouse movers take down pallet racking?

Many do, or bring in a racking installer. Ask who does it, whether it will be inspected after re-installation, and what happens to damaged parts.

Can we keep shipping during the move?

Often, if the move is phased. Some stock ships from the old site while other zones move, but it needs a clear stock plan and more trips.

Do trucks need permits to move goods between Dubai sites?

Trucks must follow RTA's road and time restrictions, and an RTA mobility permit is needed for essential trips during banned hours. Free zones may also need gate passes.
