To move home gym equipment in Dubai, find the make, model and weight of each machine, take the racks and multi-stations apart (photographing each step), move plates and dumbbells in small, separate loads, and check that the service lift and floors can take the weight. Treadmills, cable machines and loaded racks are heavier and more awkward than furniture, so tell the mover exactly what you have before it quotes.
Why gym equipment is harder to move than furniture
- Weight in a small space. Plates, dumbbells and kettlebells pack a lot of weight into a small volume. A normal moving box filled with plates will split, and a trolley stacked too high is hard to control.
- Machines come apart in a set order. Power racks, cable machines and multi-gyms have cables, pulleys, pins and bolts that must go back the same way. Getting this wrong can make the machine unsafe.
- Floors and lifts. Dragging a rack across marble or porcelain leaves scratches, and a dropped plate can crack a tile. Service lifts have a maximum load printed on a plate inside the car; a trolley of plates plus two crew members adds up quickly.
How to prepare each type of equipment
| Equipment | Before moving day | On the day |
|---|---|---|
| Treadmill | Read the manual for moving instructions. Fold and lock the deck if it folds; set the incline to zero; unplug it. | Most manufacturers advise keeping it upright. Take off the console arms if it will not fit through a door. |
| Elliptical or cross trainer | Remove pedals or arms if the manual allows; strap moving parts so they cannot swing. | Move upright on a dolly. |
| Power rack or squat rack | Photograph it from every side, then take it apart. Bag and label bolts for each section. | Carry frame sections separately; pad the uprights. |
| Cable machine or multi-gym | Photograph the cable routing before anything is undone. Remove the weight stack plates. | Consider a technician from the supplier for taking apart and putting back. |
| Weight plates and dumbbells | Take plates off bars and racks; keep pairs together. | Move in small batches on a flat dolly or in strong crates, never in ordinary boxes. |
| Bench | Remove the pad and any attachments. | Wrap the upholstery. |
| Exercise bike or rower | Lower the seat and bars; fold the rail on a rower. Drain a water rower completely. | Usually one of the easiest items; move upright. |
Protecting floors, lifts and the building
- Ask the crew to lay floor runners from the gym to the door, and to lift equipment rather than slide it.
- If you have rubber gym flooring, leave it down until the equipment is out, then roll it up last.
- Tell building management about the heavy items when you book the service lift. Ask for the lift’s maximum load and give it to the mover so it plans smaller trolley loads. Our service elevator booking guide covers the booking.
- Check the floor at the new home. If a heavy rack or multi-gym is going upstairs in a villa or onto a raised floor, ask the landlord or building whether the floor can take it.
What it usually costs
Movers price gym equipment by the number of items, their weight, how many need taking apart, and how far each one has to be carried. Typical Dubai market rates for taking apart and reassembling furniture are AED 100–400 per item (last checked October 2026; not prices offered by Movers Dubai). Heavy machines such as multi-gyms and cable stations sit at the top of that range or are quoted separately, and some movers bring in the supplier’s technician for them.
To get an accurate quote, send a list with the make, model and approximate weight of each machine, plus photos. Ask the mover to show gym items as separate lines on the quote.
Specialist gym equipment movers or your regular mover?
For a treadmill, a bike and a set of dumbbells, any experienced crew can do the job if you tell it what to expect. For commercial-grade racks, cable machines or a full home gym, ask for a crew that regularly moves heavy items and has heavy-duty dollies, stair equipment and the tools to take machines apart. Our page on heavy item movers in Dubai explains what to look for, and specialty movers in Dubai covers other awkward items.
Questions to ask:
- Have you taken apart and reassembled this make and model before?
- Who reassembles the machines at the new home, and do you test them afterwards?
- How will you move the plates and dumbbells, and how many crew will come?
- What is your liability if a machine is damaged, and does it change if I took it apart myself?
Moving a gym in a studio, office or building gym
If you are moving equipment out of a commercial or shared gym, the job is closer to a small office move: the building will want a permit, the move usually has to happen outside opening hours, and there may be rubber flooring and mirrors to take down. Plan it with the building’s facilities team, and ask for a site visit so the mover can see the access route.
Setting up at the new home
- Decide where each machine goes before moving day, and measure the space, including the ceiling height for racks and the length a treadmill needs behind it.
- Check there is a suitable power socket near the treadmill.
- After reassembly, check every bolt and cable against your photos before anyone uses the machine.
- Level the treadmill and check the belt tension as the manual describes.
Make a list of every machine with its make, model and approximate weight, then request a free quote. A mover that serves your area can price the equipment, the crew and any floor protection your building asks for.
Questions people ask
Can I move a treadmill on its side?
Follow the manual for your model. Most manufacturers advise moving a treadmill upright, with a folding deck locked in place, because tipping it can damage the motor, belt alignment and electronics. If it does not fit through a door upright, remove the console arms instead of tipping it.
Do I need to drain or disconnect anything?
Drain a water rower completely. Unplug all powered equipment the day before the move. Nothing else needs draining, but remove batteries from consoles and heart-rate monitors.
Will my building let gym equipment through the lobby?
Most Dubai buildings want heavy items to use the service entrance and service lift during a booked slot. Tell building management about the equipment when you book, and ask for the lift’s maximum load.
