Dubai Municipality's free bulky waste collection

Dubai Municipality runs a free collection for bulky waste such as used household furniture, electrical appliances and electronics, and says most of what it collects is screened and recycled. It is for Dubai residents, except those living in real estate development zones and free zones, who apply through the municipality's services.

If you live in a master community run by a developer, ask your community management how bulky items are collected there before you book anything. Do not leave furniture by the bins or in a corridor without asking building management first.

Items that need special handling

  • Electronics and e-waste: phones, laptops, TVs and cables go to e-waste collection, not general waste
  • Batteries and power banks: separate battery collection points
  • Fridges, freezers and AC units: contain refrigerant, so ask the collector how they are handled
  • Paint, chemicals and gas cylinders: not accepted with household junk; ask the supplier or a licensed collector
  • Mattresses: bulky but often accepted with furniture collections; check first
  • Laptops and hard drives: wipe or remove the drive before disposal

Clearing junk before a move

  1. Sort early

Two to three weeks before the move, mark each item: keep, sell, give away or dispose.

  2. Sell and give away first

These take the longest to arrange, so start them before booking removal.

  3. Book collection for what is left

Request the free bulky waste collection if you are eligible, or ask removal companies for prices.

  4. Book the building

Junk collection often needs the service lift and sometimes a permit, just like a move.

  5. Get the moving quote last

Once the junk has gone, the mover quotes only for what you are keeping. Send it through the quote form.

What a paid junk removal quote depends on

Volume
Usually priced by how much of a truck the load fills.
Access
Floors, lift bookings and the carry to the truck add time.
Item types
Appliances, mattresses and e-waste may cost extra to dispose of properly.
Dismantling
Wardrobes and beds that must come apart to leave the room add labour.

Planning the whole move? The home moving guide covers the rest, and move-out cleaning is the usual next step once the home is empty.

Junk removal questions

Common questions about getting rid of furniture and junk in Dubai.

Is there free furniture collection in Dubai?

Dubai Municipality offers free bulky waste collection for used furniture, appliances and electronics. It does not cover homes in real estate development zones or free zones.

How do I dispose of an old fridge or AC unit?

Use a collector that handles appliances with refrigerant properly, such as the municipality's bulky waste service where eligible, or ask the junk removal company how it disposes of them.

Will movers take away furniture I do not want?

Many will for a fee, if you tell them before the moving day so they bring enough space in the truck.

Can I leave old furniture outside my building?

Ask building management first. Buildings and communities set their own rules for bulky items, and leaving furniture in common areas usually breaks them. Book a collection instead.
